About Camp Cadet About Camp Cadet

Who Will You Be?

One of the goals at Camp Cadet is to help participants learn more about the numerous, diverse careers available in law enforcement. However, more important than helping the Cadets determine WHAT they want to be when they "grow up", Camp Cadet understands that it's not WHAT you want to be, but WHO you want to be that really matters.

Dedicated

Cadets are trained by those who have come to live by regimentation - and who understand, appreciate, and respect its value. The cadets also learn about personal commitment. They learn it from the State Police personnel who direct the program and from their volunteer counselors who freely donate their personal vacation time to Camp Cadet. These special Camp Cadet staff members have a visible impact on the cadets and often become the catalyst to maturity that turns these teenagers into young adults.

Strong character requires a strong physique. There is a half hour of physical training prior to breakfast, and nutritious meals are served by the clock: breakfast at 7:30 am, lunch at noon, and dinner at 5 pm.

Community-Minded

Cadets witness, daily, the value of society, the friendship of fellow campers and counselors, and the benefits of building teamwork in the community-at-large. They sleep and eat together, march together, learn together, and play together.

From morning roll-call to lights out, cadets share their day. Through the buddy system, the importance of safety and trust is instilled in all participants. Camp Cadet kids are challenged by rigorous physical training, the discipline of close order drilling and the precision of marching in cadence. But from that discipline, competition and teamwork, come rewards.

Educated

Camp Cadet is, above all, an educational experience. Cadets learn the real world of law enforcement is not like an hour-long television show, but is a democratic system which works for the benefit of law-abiding citizens.

The Camp Cadet experience includes an interactive tour of the judicial system - and how it works in our democracy. Cadets learn about drug enforcement (including a live demonstration of the K-9 officer's skills), they sit on both sides of the courtroom, meet with the judge and district attorney and learn about fingerprinting, mug shots and probation. The intricacies of the system and its many levels are made all the more real because cadets experience them first hand in the courtroom, in the jail, and at the State Police barracks.

Active

Camp Cadet kids share in the duties of the day but it's not all work and ceremony. Each day's schedule includes ample recreation. There are ball games, swimming, fishing, miniature golf and competitive intramurals. And cadets also learn that recreation carries its own unique responsibilities.

Fish and game commissioners, martial arts instructors and other sports professionals instruct cadets in the correct way to safely engage in various sports and recreational activities. Participants also learn that using drugs & alcohol is not recreation, but a danger to be avoided for a lifetime.

Most importantly, cadets learn that through sports, physical activity and recreation, they can build teams, explore strategies and learn how to problem-solve effectively.
